For a watch of its age, this JLC has held up reasonably well over the years, though not without the development of a little patina. I'm not sure about you, but I dig a little bit of dial discoloration in some instances, of which this is one. Though its tonneau-shaped case only measures 28 mm across, likely putting it out of consideration for most men, I think it'd be a great looking piece a on a woman's wrist.
The Hôtel de Horlogers is slightly set back from the main road, behind a garden of tulips in red, yellow, and white. I cannot say that my first thought upon entering was, "how I love watches and timekeeping and all associated and how this hotel makes me think of them." No, the first thing I said was, "Wow, that view."
A Submariner falls into one of the categories I mentioned above. It's a watch that's engineered to perform in adverse conditions. It's fantastic at what it does, and for that it's become an icon. And somewhere along the line it has also ironically become a canvas for bedazzling gem-set work. I'm unsure of the origin story for giving a tool watch the gem-set treatment, but it's very much a reality. And it's done in-house by Rolex – and Rolex doesn't make mistakes.
I had to come up with another thing called an astrolabe for a movie. I didn't even know what the heck an astrolabe was, but I found one and – it was a total rip off. I got it on eBay, and the listing said it was some kind of an antique and, sure enough, it turned out to be some really bad reproduction, but it worked for what we wanted it to. I aged it down. It's just weird stuff like that. You've just have to figure it out.
I did not expect to enjoy this watch as much as I did. I don't have the largest wrists in the world (one of my go-to watches is a Rolex Explorer) so the 36mm sizing really did it for me. And where white dial watches tend to wear bigger, this thing was true to size, through and through. The design is like being smacked in the face with '70s shag carpeting. There's just so much orange, however it never feels like too much. Maybe I like being hit with a rug?
